French Colonial copper-nickel Specimen Piefort Essai 50 Centimes 1897 SP63 PCGS, KM-PE1var., Lecompte-5var. 87% copper - 13% nickel. Identical to Lecompte-5 in design, but not struck in nickel. Possibly unique as such and apparently made using an experimental alloy mixture, the composition appearing to have a much higher copper content than the standard silvery copper-nickel issue. Boldly detailed, with an attractive gold and reddish-golden hue throughout. An item that should carry significant appeal with collectors of French Colonial patterns and trails.
Estimate: 1500-2000 USD
