Republic 8 Reales 1859 Oa-AE AU Details (Surface Hairlines) NGC, Oaxaca mint, KM377.11, DP-Oa03. Variety with the eagle of 1859-1860. A well preserved coin with only scant wear, and amazingly detailed for this notoriously crude issue with a full "Libertad" inscription on the liberty cap and crisp details on the eagle's breast, the noted wispy handling marks of little if any consequence. Perhaps 6 examples of this very rare variety are known, this being one of the very finest if not the finest in terms of eye appeal seen by the cataloger since essentially fully struck up in the centers, as noted. The authors of "Resplandores" obviously concurred with this opinion since they chose the present coin to illustrate the variety while also commenting that "(only) A couple of well struck spectacular examples of the second type are known". Despite the slight noted shortcomings, a superb coin for this very rare variety, thus of great importance to the specialist of this series and sure to attract sustained interest. From the FoxLair Collection
