Republic 8 Reales 1868 (1863) Oa-AE MS61 NGC, Oaxaca mint, KM377.11, DP-unl. ("probably ... no true examples of an 1868 AE exist"). Variety with "A" inside "O" in the mintmark. Sharply struck Mint State and very pleasant for the designation with full mint luster and moderate wispy handling marks preventing a higher technical grade. A clear 1868 dated coin, struck from the same obverse (date side) die as DP-Oa10, before the last digit in the date was repunched with a "3". Importantly, this example proves that the chronology of events proposed in DP is indeed correct and as such, this variety represents an error dated coin, similar to the famous 1287 Ga-FS (KM377.6, DP-Ga03) dated issue. One of only 4 examples and possibly the finest extant of this date confirmed by the cataloger, thus certain to become one of the centerpieces in the next collection of Mexican Cap & Rays 8 Reales that will house it.From the FoxLair Collection
