Riga. Free City Taler of 18 Ferdingen 1573 XF45 NGC, Riga mint, Dav-8458. A rare issue of Riga in its capacity as a Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire, this example exhibiting scattered striking weakness offset by attractive gold and lilac tone. Talers were minted for only two years (1573 and 1574) of the 20 years that Riga maintained free status, between the collapse of the Livonian Order in 1561 and its absorption into the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth by treaty in 1581.
