Saint Vincent
British Colonies Countermarked 1/2 Dollar ND (1797) VF20 NGC, Authorized by act of December 1797. Weight 10.27 grams (still a bit light for the 1797 act standard which required a minimum weight for the cut half dollar of 10.886 grams). Wholesome and obviously circulated yet attractive with "SV" punches still sharply defined. A lightweight cut half segment of a Spanish Colonial Charles III 8 Reales with a central plug to regulate its weight, countermarked on the reverse with three "SV" monogram punches. Extremely rare with the central plug, and of the heaviest seen example by the cataloguer, thus very desirable. Ex. Byrne Collection (Jess Peters 6/1975, lot 1089).
Estimate: 2000-3000 USD
