Swedish Possessions - Riga. Christina gold 4 Ducat 1646 H-W AU53 NGC, Riga mint, 13.7g, Henrik Wulff (Wulffensköld) as mintmaster, Fr-11. Hagander-184, Neumann-43, Ahlström-32 (XR). Bust right in ornamented dress / A pair of lions supporting the arms of Riga, the date in a cartouche below. An extremely rare issue of Riga under Swedish authority, this piece is solidly struck and exhibits only light handling with minimal circulation wear. A mere handful of surface marks are clearly visible without the aid of a glass and serve primarily to confirm the pedigree to the Hagander collection. With this particular specimen being the only example of this issue to have appeared at auction in the past decade, we anticipate spirited bidding from specialists in this series.Riga fell under Swedish control in 1621 during the Polish-Swedish War, a sub-conflict of the 30 Years War, and nearly a decade prior to the intervention of Gustavus Adolphus in Germany. Despite the death of Gustavus in 1632, Riga remained under Swedish suzerainty until 1710 when Estonia and Livonia capitulated to the Russian Empire in the Great Northern War (formally recognized in the Treaty of Nystad in 1721).Ex. Julius Hagander Collection Part 1 (Künker 185, March 2011, Lot 6060); Ex. Ahlström Auction 24 (October 1981, Lot 276); acquired by Hagander from Claes-Olof Algård of Vancouver in 1985.

Estimate: 100000-125000 USD
