Karl XII silver Death Medal 1718 AU Details (Tooled) NGC, engraved by Peter Berg, Galster-312, Ossbahr-195, 50mm, 58.15g. Obv. Norwegian lion standing over defeated Swedish lion with Fredriksten fortress at Fredrikshald in Norway, in the background. Rev. Eight-line inscription. The engraving is superb, with original lead-gray patina. The fields on both sides have been tooled.A very rare medal, popular in Norway as it tells of Karl II's death. Karl was inspecting trenches on December 11, 1718, during the siege of the Norwegian fort at Fredrikshald. During his inspection he was killed by a gun shot from an unknown assailant. Even with several autopsies over the years, on Karl's remains, there is still no certain finding of exactly how, or by whom, he was killed.

Estimate: 1000-1200 USD
