GREEK COINS
SATRAPS of CARIA

Hekatomnos, circa 392/1-377/6 BC. Stater (Silver, 23mm, 12.55 g), Miletos. ΕΚΑ Head of a roaring lion to left, his leg stretched to right below. Rev. Stellate pattern. Jameson 1563 = SNG von Aulock 2355. Traité II, 84, pl. LXXXIX, 17. Very rare, and certainly one
of the finer examples known. Good very fine.

From an American collection.
Hekatomnos was the founder of a dynasty of which his son Maussollos (lot 105) is surely the best known today; never-the-less, Hekatomnos was surely the most successful since he expanded his borders to include Miletos and other cities in Asia. In fact, the types he used for this stater (and its fractions) are actually those of Miletos.
