The Dutch Republic. Maurice, Prince of Orange, Stadholder, 1585-1625, Sovereign Prince, 1618-1625. Medal (Silver, 34.5mm, 11.72 g 12), by Gautier van Bylaer, on the capture of Grave, 1602. MAVRITIVS.PR.AVR.CO.NASS.CAT.MARC.VER.ET.VLIS Armored bust of Maurice to right, wearing ruff and cloak; below bust, G.V.B.F (=Gautier van Bylaer fecit). Rev. TANDEM.FIT. SVRCVLVS.ARBOR /ANNO 1602 (the shoot finally becomes a tree) Orange tree growing from the cut down stump of another; all within a laurel wreath. Van Loon I, pp. 553-554, 3. Very attractively toned and with a noble portrait of Maurice of Orange. About extremely fine.

This medal was struck to celebrate the victory of Maurice over the Spanish relief force that had been sent to relieve the garrison of Grave, which subsequently was honorably surrendered to Maurice's forces.
