The Dutch Republic. Utrecht. Medal (Silver, 55mm, 49.89 g 12), on the Dutch defeat under Maurice of Orange of the Spanish attempt to capture Bergem op Zoom; by J. van Bylaer, 1622. HOSTIBVS MAVRITIO DVCE FVGATIS IEHOVAE VICTORIA (=the enemies put to flight by Maurice; victory of Jehova!) Elaborate trophy of arms with, at the center, crested helmet on top of pierced drum. Rev. Van Loon II, p. 149, ii. Rare. Attractive and bright. Minor edge bang at 12, otherwise, extremely fine.

Bergen-op-Zoom was a major fortress and arsenal of the United Provinces and was attacked by Farnese in 1587 and Spinola in 1622, in both cases unsuccessfully. This medal commemorates the Spanish defeat in 1622.
