The Dutch Republic. Leiden. Medal (Silver, 56mm, 74.89 g 12), reward medal for the collectors of the hearth tax in Leiden; by the engraver AS, 1666. OPERÆ PRO ARIS ET FOCIS PRÆSTITÆ REDHOSTIMENVM (=a just recompense for the work done for religion and the fatherland) Alchemist seated in his study; in the exergue, in tiny letters, A S; within the inscription, arms of the four previous burgermeisters. Rev. ARGENTVM EX FVMO NON ARS SED OBSEQVIVM FECIT (=smoke can be turned into silver by obedience, not by artiface) Seven lines of a Dutch poem about alchemy; above, crowned arms of Leiden, with the date 1666; below, view of the city. Van Loon p. 516. Very rare. Attractively toned. Tiny collector's mark on the edge, otherwise, extremely fine.
