GREEK COINS
THESSALY
Pherai. Alexander, Tyrant, 369-359 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 15mm, 2.84 g 5). Youthful head of Jason to left, wearing petasos. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑ - ΝΔΡΕΙΟΝ Horse's hoof and lower leg to right. BCD 1312 and Traité IV, 617, pl. CCXCIV, 18 (same dies?). Extremely rare. Well centered and attractive. Slightly rough, crystallized surfaces, otherwise, good very fine.
From a European collection, formed before 2005.
This is one of the most beautiful coins produced in Thessaly: the wonderful BCD example was fought over to such extent that it brought the astounding price of CHF 155,000.- Of course, the present coin is in much lesser condition, but the beauty and rarity remain the same.
