GREEK COINS
CRETE

Lyttos. Circa 320-270 BC. Stater (Silver, 21mm, 11.47 g 10). Eagle, with spread wings, standing to right, preparing to fly. Rev. ΛΥΚ / ΤΙΟΝ Boar's head to right; within deep and somewhat irregular incuse square. Le Rider -. Cf. Svoronos pl. XXII, 7 (obverse). A rare variety; bold and attractive. Overstruck, with traces of an undertype on the obverse; otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From the Brünn Collection, acquired in Italy prior to World War I.
This coin, with the extraordinary archaic style legend λυκτιον, rather than λυττιον, is only paralleled by two pieces, 41 and 42, in Svoronos' supplement.
