ex George Hamilton-Smith collection, Glendining's, 21 May 1919, lot 44, sold for £9
ex E H Wheeler collection, Sotheby's, 12 March 1930, lot 373, sold for £2/2/-, illustrated on plate IX
Wheeler was an aggressive buyer at many of the high profile coin auctions from the late 19th Century, including Montagu and Murdoch, Ready, Walters, Marsham, Roth and Carlyon-Britton. He would bid directly rather than through an agent and as such was well known for paying far more than the market value of the time, a fact which infuriated much of the trade, in particular Cyril Lockett who, as a result, and along with many other collectors and dealers, refused to participate in his sale of 1930. Consequently the sale was not as successful as it perhaps should have been, realising only £4283-10-0, almost half the amount that Wheeler had paid and clearly borne out by the decrease in price for this crown from 1919 to 1930.

Estimate: £2500-3000
