Plautius Hypsaeus (58 BC), Silver Denarius, M SCAVR / AED CVR / EX – SC / REX ARET[AS], King Aretas of Nabataea kneeling right before his camel, holding an olive-branch tied with a fillet, rev HVPSAE / AED CVR / C HVPSAE COS / PREIVE – CAPTV, Jupiter in fast quadriga left, holding reins and hurling a thunderbolt, a scorpion below horses, 3.68g, 6h (Cr 422/1b; Syd 912; RBW 1519). Good metal, about extremely fine.
The obverse of this coin refers to the capture of Aretas III of Nabataea in 62 BC. It was Scaurus himself who had secured the surrender Aretas, and this issue marks the first instance of a moneyer publicising an event from his own career on a coin.
