EGYPT-1840 , Egypt/France, Mehmet Ali Pasha (1769-1849), Defender of his Country, Bronze Medal, by Emile Rogat, bearded bust right wearing tasseled fez, legends in French and Arabic, rev a broad scimitar sword centre, the blade inscribed NESIB 1839 , and in Arabic with date 1255, legends in French and Arabic, 51mm.Almost Extremely Fine, many small contact marks to reverse, and the medal has been pierced at 12 o'clock to accomodate a loop. A very RARE medallion from; The Alexandria Collection.

Mehmet Ali Pasha, Governor [Vali] of Misir (elected 1805), Sudan (which he conquered in 1822-1823) Filistin, Suriye, Hicaz, Mora, Tasoz and Girit. Later he occupied Syria 1831-1840. He is buried in the Alabaster Mosque in the Citadel in Cairo, the same Citadel where he massacred the Mamluks in 1811. The scimitar on the medal's reverse records the Battle of Nesib, when on the 29 th June, 1839, the Turkish army was badly defeated. Great Britain, as well as Russia had been supportive of Turkey, but France gave encouragement to Egypt.
