Ernest Horace Lamb was born at Adelaide, South Australia, 5 May 1878. He was the eldest son of Sir Horace Lamb who was at that time Professor of Mathematics at Adelaide University.
Lamb was educated at Manchester Grammar School and Owen's College Manchester (later the University of Manchester) where, in 1899, he gained a First-Class Honours Degree in Engineering. He went on to obtain MSc and DSc Degrees, Membership of the Institutes of both mechanical and Civil Engineering as well as innumerable other honours and awards throughout a distinguished academic career.
On 25 September 1914, while Professor of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at East London College, University of London, Lamb volunteered for war service with the Royal Marines Divisional Engineers. He was commissioned the following month and in March 1915 embarked for Gallipoli as Lieutenant, Royal Naval Division (Divisional Engineers), Royal Marines. He distinguished himself in the actions on ANZAC Beach and Cape Helles and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (London Gazette 7 November 1915) and Mentioned in Despatches on two occasion (London Gazette 5 November 1915 and 11 December 1915). He was sent home on 25 January 1916 following severe dysentery and after returning to health, transferred to the R.M.V.R. in March 1916 for special duties at HMS Vernon. By 1917 he had charge of work on special designs for naval mining appliances at HMS Gunwharf.
