The scene portrayed on the reverse of this coin is the discovery by Dionysos (though not represented here) and his cortège, of Ariadne asleep in Naxos after her desertion by Theseus. It has been suggested by that this depiction of Ariadne most likely recalled a well-known sculpture, perhaps the 'Sleeping Ariadne', a Hellenistic sculpture of which a Roman copy is now in the Vatican Museum
