Hadrian AR Denarius. Rome, AD 117. IMP CAES TRAIAN HADRIANO AVG DIVI TRA, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / SPQR OPTIMO PRINCIPI, equestrian statue of Trajan (equus Traiani of Traian's forum) depicting the emperor on horseback left carrying spear and Victory. RIC -, cf. 9-13 (Hadrian) for obv., 291 (Trajan) for rev. 2.97g, 17mm, 6h.
Very Fine. Toned. Interesting mule denarius using a reverse die of Trajan's with one of Hadrian's earliest obverse types.
Unusually, this mule uses an obverse and a reverse of different emperor's, also utilising one of the more scarce and interesting of Trajan's reverse types: although several reverse variants show Trajan on horseback, those dating to his sixth consulship in AD 112 are likely to depict the equestrian statue of the Emperor that once stood in his forum in Rome, which was dedicated in this year.
