AUSTRALIAN GOLD SOVEREIGNS. Victoria, 1837-1901. Gold Sovereign, 1887-M, Melbourne. Shield. 8.00 g. 22.05 mm. Marsh 68, S.3854A. One of the key dates of the Austrlian shield sovereign series. The annual output from Melbourne of 1887 was 1,916,424 but they struck St. George reverse (which is common) and shields until June 1887, then for the rest of the year Jubilee heads only, which is why the shield type is rare for the date.
