Great Britain. Proof Pattern Farthing, 1771. Peck-910. George III. Obverse, draped laureate bust of king right GEORGIVS III REX. Reverse, Britannia on globe with heraldic shield. BRITAN NIA. Date 1771 in exergue. Mint state and extremely scarce in top grades. NGC graded Proof 61 Brown.
* Peck notes that that the 1771 Proof farthings are similar to the current farthings of 1771 except that the border teeth are thicker and the rims are usually faulty. This specimen does not disappoint on the second count and a large piece of raised excess metal is evident on the reverse rim alongside the NNIA in BRITANNIA. A slightly less raised piece of excess metal runs along the top of the reverse rim for much of the left side of the coin, and below the obverse portrait there is a raised piece of metal. In fact a quick glance at plate 15 of Peck's book shows that his own specimen had similar die idiosyncracies! Estimated Value $1,500 - 1,700
