Great Britain. Gothic Crown, 1847. S.3883; ESC-288; Dav-106; KM-744. Victoria. Obverse, Gothic style ornate crowned bust by Wyon, legend surrounding in gothic script: Victoria dei gratia britanniar.reg: f:d. Reverse, crowned cruciform shields, emblems in angles, garter star at center: tueatur unita deus, date in legend in Roman numerals: anno dom mdccccxlvii. Edge reads: decus et tutamen anno regni undecimo ('an ornament and a safeguard, in the eleventh year of our reign') in raised letters. Proof with pastel blue toning over mirror-like surfaces. A delightful example of what is probably Britain's most iconic silver coin. Impaired Proof.
*In Linecar and Stone there is a reference … 'This is the celebrated Gothic crown by W. Wyon whose initials appear on the truncation and on either side of the crown surmounting one of the shields of England on the reverse… .It appears that 8000 were struck and Mr Stride of the Royal Mint has stated that the Gothic crowns were never issued for ordinary circulation, and that all were struck in proof state. Some appear with the design frosted (however) these apparently are earlier strikings.' L&S also records that perhaps the earliest noted offering of the cherished Gothic crown was found in a list by the dealer Henry T. Rice of Derby, northern England, who about 1850 was asking 17 shillings and sixpence for an extremely fine specimen in a morocco case! Estimated Value $2,500-UP
