WORLD COINS, AUSTRALIA, The Adelaide Assay Office, Edwin Sawtell's Electrotype Copy of the obverse only of the famous 1852 gold ingot produced by Joshua Payne (1810-1889), die-sinker and stamper, of irregular rectangular form, showing the multiple stamps, a circular stamp recording weight of ingot, Carat stamp and Assay Mark (a shield with S.A. with a crown above), 43.5mm x 28mm, additionally stamped SAWTELL in top left corner. Right edge rough, otherwise very fine, rare.
Edwin Sawtell was "chronometer and nautical instrument maker" in Adelaide, who reportedly jointly-owned an Adelaide Ingot with the politician Thomas Reynolds and headmaster Thomas Walters. This is now in the Dixson Collection, in the State Library of New South Wales. The electrotypes, usually a complete ingot, would have been made within 40 years of the ingots being in circulation.

Estimate: £150-250
