WORLD COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, MEDALS BY SUBJECT, Banking, The Royal Institution, Copper Ticket, 1804, named to Sir Henry Hugh Hoare, 3rd Bt (1762–1841) of Stourhead, partner in Hoare's Bank, tree grows from crown, 28mm (D&W 437); others (2), pewter, to T Dimsdale Esq, and W .... Esq (the name illegible), 28.5mm (D&W 438). First fine, obverse once gilt, a fascinating association item, others very fine and fine. (3)
The Royal Institution of Great Britain was founded in 1799 in London, by the leading British scientists. It is devoted to scientific education and research. Sir Henry Hugh Hoare built the portico at Stourhead. T. Dimsdale believed to be Thomas Robert Dimsdale, 4th Baron Dimsdale (1796-1865), grandson of Thomas Dimsdale who discovered the technique of smallpox vaccination.
