d'Urville circumnavigated the globe three times between 1822 and 1840. He surveyed New Zealand and New Guinea and his expedition to Antarctica and Australasia in two ships, the Astrolabe and Zélée, charted much of the north east of the Antarctic Peninsula. d'Urville, his wife and only child were killed in France's first railway accident, at Versailles on 8 May 1842.
