Szechuan. Empire brass Specimen Pattern Dollar ND (1898) SP61 PCGS, Ferracute or Philadelphia mint, cf. L&M-345, cf. Kann-145, KM-Pn15. Virtually identical to the adopted design for the year, but struck in brass rather than the intended silver. A rare pattern that was almost certainly produced at the Ferracute Machine Company (it was most likely struck at Ferracute's Bridgeton, New Jersey headquarters due to the usage of a brass alloy which was used for other projects, but there is also the possibility that they were actually struck at U.S. Mint in Philadelphia since they are known to have used Ferracute's machinery) in 1898 to illustrate what the establishment of minting operations in Chengtu would be capable of. The present example is certainly among the finest extant of those that survive, with no marks worthy of mention and delicate areas of original brightness that halo the raised surfaces. Several deeper-colored areas are noted on both sides, but these are of minimal visual significance. Currently only surpassed in grade by a single example at PCGS, and for the collector of either pattern coinage or dollar-sized issues, a perfect compliment piece to an already elite collection.
Estimate: 25000-30000 USD
