People's Republic gold & silver "Year of the Child" Proof Piefort Set 1979, including the 35 Yuan and 450 Yuan, KM-P1 and KM-P2. Both are struck in double weight and thickness and are Gem Cameo Proof. The respective mintages are 2000 pieces and 500 pieces, the gold 450 Yuan being significantly more scarce. Both pieces remain in light plastic capsules, the silver exhibiting traces of cloudiness and a couple of minuscule surface marks, the gold 450 Yuan with fewer marks and more uniform color. A red-leatherette Cartier case is included along with an unnumbered COA from the retailer that originally marketed this set, rather than from the mint.The International Year of the Child was proclaimed in 1979 by UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) in support of UNICEF (The United Nations Children's Emergency Fund) on the 20th anniversary of the 1959 Declaration of the Rights of the Child. Its purpose was to draw attention to and raise funds for worldwide problems affecting children, such as malnutrition and difficulty in accessing education. Funds and awareness raised resulted ten years later in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which 196 countries are currently party.
