Republic gold Proof 2-1/2 Dollars 1902 PR65 NGC, KM72. The Philadelphia Mint coined 193 proof quarter eagles this year, a slight decline from the previous two years when mintages exceeded 200 proofs per year. Mintage figures remained static, or declined further, through the end of the Liberty quarter eagle series in 1907. Mint officials discouraged cameo contrast on the proof coins in 1902 and later years. This piece reflects that change, with deeply mirrored fields and satiny, sharply detailed devices that exhibit little contrast.
