EARLY MEDIEVAL COINS, Charles le Chauve (843-877), Denier (circa 864-875) (Les Estinnes), Immobilization (?) (circa 10-11th century ?) (Silver, 1.63 gr, 20 mm) Cross LETINAS VICO Rev. Carolingian monogram CARILVIS ASX. Frère 13, VH E31. Extremely Fine, attractively toned.
Of the highest rarity. This piece was probably cast locally, in Les Estinnes, which is located in the province of Hainaut, and originated from the merger, in 1977, of the former municipalities of Estinnes-au-Val Estinnes-au-Mont. It was casted to a heavier standard, with a weight of 1.63 gr. The legend on obverse LETINAS VICO, refers the Village of Les Estinnes. This piece could be an immobilization of the original denier issued during Charles the Bald's reign, probably made a century, or two, after his death.
