*Domenico Poggini (1520-90), Domenico Fontana (1543-1607), architect in Rome, bronze medal, 1589, bust right, rev., four obelisks each surmounted by a cross, 40mm. (Attwood 825; Arm. II, 63, 6; Pollard Bargello 840 = Vannel & Toderi 811), pierced, very fine contemporary striking [Clifford lot 161]. The four obelisks re-erected by Fontana on the instructions of Pope Sixtus V are the ones in front of St. Peter's (1586), Sta. Maria Maggiore (1587), S. Giovanni in Laterano (1588) and in the Piazza del Popolo (1589). (400 - 600)
