*Attributed to Gaspare Morone (1603-69), Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo, bronze medal, draped bust right as a knight of the Order of S. Stefano, rev., three children standing before the seated figure of Pietas, one of whom appears to be holding up a coin, 86mm (Vannel & Toderi, Bargello, 1234 – as unattributed; Fitzwilliam Museum accession no. CM.240-1963 – 89mm; BDM IV, 156), cast from a pierced example, otherwise about extremely fine with dark patina [ex Clifford collection]. This Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo was the younger brother of Cassiano dal Pozzo, the patron of Poussin. Cassiano commissioned Bernini to create a fine marble bust of their uncle, also named Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo (1547-1607) in c. 1622-24, which was at Castle Howard from 1715 until purchased by the Scottish National Gallery in 1986. The present medal relates to the Collegio Puteano founded by the uncle in Piedmont in 1605 to benefit impoverished pupils. (300 - 500)
