Meaning "the door" in Arabic, the town of al-Bab served as the passage between the cities of Aleppo and Buza'ah. Conquered by the Rashidun caliph Umar, the town was the site of the tomb of Aqil ibn Abi Talib, a companion and first cousin of Muhammad, as well as the brother of Ali, all-Bab was populated largely by Ismaili Shi'ites.
