Ionia. Uncertain. Electrum 1/24 Stater. Fourrée. 0.39 gms. Straited obverse, rev. Incuse punch where plating has been lost exposing bronze core. Cf. Rosen 268, BMC 19. These early Ionian coins were an attempt to standardize metal weight and prevent counterfeiting by proving metal quality through the incuse punch which would appear to expose part of the core. This technique obviously failed as contemporary counterfeiters just plated in and over the punch. Perhaps one of the earliest known fourrées. Good Very Fine.
