Macedon. Akanthos. AR Tetradrachm, ca. 430-390 BC. 13.68 gms. Lion right, attacking bull, kneeling left; the lion’s mouth is clamped down on the bull’s hindquarters, its head viewed partially profile, linear inverted chevron pattern in ex., rev. AKA-N-ΘIO-Σ around granulated, quadripartite square, all within shallow incuse square. The ethnic appears to have been altered in the die, as traces of an “N” are clear beneath the “Σ”. Desneux --; cf. AMNG III 21; SNG ANS 14var. (no symbol on obverse). Unpublished in the standard references. Some minor roughness. The fluid motion and subjects positioning in the obverse design must certainly have presented a challenge to die engravers at this time. Here it is well-executed with both a lion and bull in fine style, and their primal battle clear. Choice Very Fine.

Estimate: - $2,500.00
