ΣΩΦYTOY, Cock standing right, caduceus in left field. Bop. Sophytes 3A, SNG ANS 22, MIG Type 29b. The identity and position of Sophytes remain a mystery. But current thought is that he was a local ruler installed ca. 305 BC by Seleukos I during his eastern campaign and war with the Mauryan emperor Chandragupta. Thus this coinage would have been struck prior to the establishment of the Seleukid mints in the area in ca. 294 BC. Slight porosity. Near Extremely Fine and rare.
