Macedon. Amphipolis. AR Drachm, 369/368 BC. 3.5 gms. Laurel-wreathed head of Apollo ¾ right, rev. AMΦ-IПO-ΛIT-EΩN in linear square around torch, all within incuse square. Lorber 60a. Rare and among only 50 recorded specimens. Founded in 437 BC by the Athenian general Hagnon son of Nicias, Amphipolis became Athens’ power base in Thrace. The Athenian population, was a very small minority, and Amphipolis remained an independent city and ally of Athens as opposed to a colony. In 424 BC, the city was taken by the Spartan general Brasidas. Athenian attempts to retake the city were unsuccessful. Amphipolis, though, maintained its independence, a status finally squashed in 357 BC with the city’s capture by Philip II of Macedon. During the independent city’s short numismatic period, it produced a superb series of coinage depicting Apollo. The artists and celators were greatly influenced by the work that Kimon did in Syracuse, and produced dies of outstanding artistry and technical skill. Excellent metal quality. Struck from dies of the highest artistic merit – a miniature masterpiece. Near Extremely Fine.
