Macedon. Neapolis. AR Stater, ca. 500-480 BC. 7.76 gms. First coinage series. Facing gorgoneion with protruding tongue, rev. Quadripartite incuse square. AMNG III 2, SNG ANS 406ff, Dewing 1604, Traité I 1740. Rare. Outside of numismatics, Neapolis is largely unknown, even its exact location is unknown. Apparently it was founded by colonists from Mende in the 6th Century BC. During the Graeco-Persian War, like many of its neighbors, it supplied troops and ships to Xerxes and afterwards became a member of the Delian League. The bottom cut (or broken neatly) across losing gorgon’s chin. Otherwise Near Extremely Fine.

Estimate: - $400.00
