SICILY, Syracuse. Agathokles, 317-289 BC. 100 Litrai (Electrum, 19mm, 6.70 g 3). ΣΥΡAKOΣIΩN Laureate head of Apollo to left; behind, lunar eclipse. Rev. ΣΩTEIPA Diademed head of Artemis Soteira to right, wearing pendant earring and pearl nicklace. Jenkins Group D, a/a (this specimen cited). Of the highest rarity, one of possibly only two known. Tiny flan crack and minor file marks on edge at 5-8 o'clock on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.

From the James et Sneja Velkov collection, Vinchon, 24 November 1994, 18, ex Monnaies et Médailles 37, 5 December 1968, 141, Ars Classica XVI, 3 July 1933, Ars Classica X, 15-18 June 1925 and Ars Classica IV, 17-19 June 1922.

This is an astoundingly rare coin: Jenkins knew just two specimens, this one included. It therefore comes as no surprise that it has an extensive pedigree and was sold in no less than three Ars Classica sales and one of Monnaies & Médailles!
