John (1199-1216), ‘Short Cross’ Coinage, Pennies (2), class 6aí1 var, London, 1.40g, Ilger, i.m. cross pattée, obv. legend ends re/x, rev. +ilger•on•lvnd, good fine, 1.28g, Walter, +walter•on•lv, good fine (N.974/1; S.1353; Stewartby VIa1 var), rare (2).
:Both ex Greek HoardStruck from different irregular obverse dies, this interesting pair share features of both classes 5c and 6a. The E appears with or without a spur, the legend ending with X only after the sceptre is reminiscent of class 5c*, the X is but is not composed of wedges ,but quite large and flat as per 6a1, nor is it composed of thin lines with some ends splayed resembling a cross potent. Unusual.
Estimate: £100.00 - £150.00
