Henry III (1216-1272), ‘Short Cross’ Coinage, Penny, London, Class 6cí1/6cí2 mule, Ravf, 1.41g, rev. +ravf•on•lvnde, ornamental letters, toned, very fine, (N.978/N.976/2; S.1356/S.1355A; Stewartby VIc1/2; BNJ vol.11, pl.iv 41), very rare.
:ex L A Lawrence; Bt A H Baldwin, March 1960This coin was illustrated in Lawrence’s 1915 article on the Short Cross coinage where it was given as a Class VII-Vic mule. Lord Stewarby’s envelope records this as a VIc1/2 mule. The lettering appears shorter than usual for a 6c and the S has crescent ends, but the R has the longer serif associated with class 6, i.e the lettering is mixed.
Estimate: £200.00 - £250.00
