Cross Moline over plain cross, +edwarrangldnshyb, facing bust, rev. civi tas dvr eme, long cross, three pellets in each angle, struck slightly off-centre, nearly very fine, (N.1042/3, N.1043/1; S.1421, S.1423; the second, SCBI 39/729 this coin; Stewartby p.175, XS4, XS5a), all very rare (4).
:(i) ex Ednam Hoard(ii) J J North (from Spink, 1965); Bt October 1998 The fourth coin was initially labelled as an imitation, but the Cross Moline over Plain Cross initial mark and recut second R over A would not be expected on an imitation. It therefore appears to be a crude, probably locally reworked official die, replacing the original legend EDWA R with EDWARR. It features an irregular style h, the additional R having a scroll tail (the first remaining stub-tailed), one eye pellet positioned on the bridge of the nose, the straight sided fleur of the trifoliate crown converted to bifoliate as seen on 10ab, a damaged dexter ornament and a partially degradedcentral fleur. Unusual and interesting.
Estimate: £100.00 - £150.00
