George V. 1910-1936. Gray metal cast of the Modified Effigy coin design. 134 mm. Weighs 1 pound, 12.9 ounces. 5 1/2 inches diameter, 5/8" thick). By Bertram MacKennal. The 1926 head of George V, left. GEORGIVS V D. T. BRITT: OMN: REX R.D. IND: IMP: around. NASCA, July 16-19, 1979, lot 1878 estimated at "$500 up". This piece came from that sale and a copy of the page from that sale is available with the piece. The NASCA grading note points out that it was "Evidently made for work purposes." After noting the gray patination and minor surface marks (there is also an eruption of some kind in the center at the ear) the cataloger at that time noted "No damage-simply, the model was never made to be a 'collectible.' A fascinating piece, of much greater import than struck coin-module patterns, and of course unique!" Unique, from the artist's collection. Mackennal (1863-1931) was an Australian sculptor successful in both Australia and Great Britain. Some of his work was purchased for the National Gallery of British Art. He became closely associated with the reign of George V designing his Coronation Medal as well as the obverse design of the King's coinage beginning with his reign in 1911. Mackennal's design was also adopted for the postage stamps issued during George V's reign.
