Brunswick. City 1-1/4 Taler 1659 MS62 NGC, Brunswick mint, with titles of Leopold I, Hans Becker as mintmaster, KM52, Dav-265 (LS). A highly original and attractively toned specimen of this city issue of Brunswick. The strike is excellent overall and the flan exhibits few flaws. This variety features the value engraved on the die, rather than punched into the base of the city arms.Brunswick (Braunschweig) issued coins in its own right numerous times throughout the Medieval and Early Modern periods, although it was never technically an Imperial Free City in the proper sense. Rather, as a member of the Hanseatic League, the burghers of the city wielded enough economic power to engage the ruling nobility and in many instances run the city as they saw fit, often including the minting of coinage independent of the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg.From the Cape Coral Collection of Multiple Talers
