Fürstenberg-Stühlingen. Joseph Wenzel 4 Taler 1767-ARW MS64 NGC, Stuttgart mint, 111.47g, engraved by Adam Rudolph Werner, KM19, Dav-2269, Dav-276 (LS). An absolutely stunning and broad example from the Mining Taler series. In terms of relative scarcity, this 4 Taler is significantly rarer than the 3 Taler of the same type. Approximately half a dozen or so 3 Talers have appeared at public auction for every 4 Taler that has come available, this particular example having last been offered by Heritage in September of 2007 with one other distinct example sold in the interim by Sincona in May 2014 (Auction 18, Lot 1399). We have been unable to trace the sale of any other 4 Talers besides this pair in the current millennium. The quality of this respective offering is exceptional; beautiful cabinet tone has settled upon nearly prooflike fields with full, underlying mint brilliance. The only flaw of note is a tiny flan crack (as made) at 3 o'clock on the obverse. Otherwise, the strike appears fully realized and there are no distracting marks or abrasions in the fields. The charming reverse design features St. Wenzel standing to the right of a scene of the Wenzel mine, the source of the silver for this piece. The Wenzel mine was operated sporadically from the 14th century until it was considered to be played out in 1823. One of the heaviest periods of activity began in 1760 under the leadership of Johann Martin Kapf, producing enough ore that the St. Wenzel Mining Company was founded in 1765. The largest ore deposit ever found in the mine was discovered in 1767, the year this piece was struck. It was a vein nearly 80 meters long and was excavated through 1771. As with most Löser produced during times of abundant ore production, this type would have been sold to a landowner with the express purpose of redemption back to the treasury in the event specie was required by war or crisis. From the Cape Coral Collection of Multiple Talers
