Appenzell. Canton 4 Franken (Taler) 1816 MS63 NGC, KM12, Dav-368, HMZ-228b. Mintage: 1,850. One-year type. As an issue, one of the scarcest and most desirable cantonal talers, with the present example being a certainty to appeal to the lover of tone. Richly patinated on both sides, the surfaces exhibit dramatic, fiery multicolored tone when viewed at an angle, with gold, green and blue shades adding considerable flash. Beneath the tone, minimal handling is visible. A touch of striking incompleteness on the standing knight's head, observed on many of the survivors, likely prevented a finer grade. From the Redwood Collection of Swiss Coins
