Basel. City Medallic "Hen" Taler ND (c. 1650) MS63 NGC, Schwartz-1169var. 42.5mm/23.77g. By F. Fechter. A stunningly accomplished medallic taler, the engraving, which illustrates a mother hen with chicks on one side and a city view of Basel of the other, being second to none. In addition to the remarkable engraving, the condition is also exemplary, with a strike that ideally executes every detail, minimal handling throughout, light prooflike reflectivity in the fields and complimentary tone. Substantially rare than the reverse type typically seen (although that issue can be considered rare in its own right), this variety features a modified city-view and arm in the reverse exergue that lack basilisk supporters. In fact, the last sale of this type we've been able to locate brought $5,000 hammer in a May 2006 Goldberg auction. Altogether, one of the most visually mesmerizing items in the entire Redwood Collection. From the Redwood Collection of Swiss Coins
