Basel. City 2 Taler ND (c. 1670) XF - Mounted, KM71, Dav-1741 (LS-587), HMZ-277b. 51mm/54.39g. A pleasingly detailed large-size city-view multiple with attractive, undoubtedly original earthen patina over both sides. One ancient dig is observed to the right of BASILEA and we note a tiny cavity where a hook mount would have been placed at 12 o'clock. Certified by NGC long ago as XF45 and due to the unavailability of larger slabs at the time, not encapsulated in a plastic holder. This huge taler offers a perspective view of the old city divided by the river Rhine, showing roads in the foreground, boats on the river and the bridge across it to the oldest quarter of the city with its many towers, and "floating" above the city view is its name in a cartouche. The image is highly suggestive of the narrow lanes that still meander through the tall old buildings. Basel, on the edge of the country very near both Germany and France, has a long and interesting history of more than a thousand years, and has long been a commercial center. This excellent coin captures it in a Renaissance "snapshot." From the Redwood Collection of Swiss Coins
