Basel. City gold Ducat ND (After 1700) MS63 NGC, KM177var., Fr-48, HMZ-294a. One of two major varieties of the issue and seemingly the slightly scarcer (and perhaps earlier striking with German and Swiss catalogs dating this piece "after 1700" whereas the other is often dated "around 1775 or 1780") of the two, with the obverse shield having been engraved in normal fashion with laurel sprays as well as the addition of NOVUS below the denomination in the reverse inscription. Whatever the actual chronology of the issues, it is absolutely coveted in either form given their rarity. Most recently, we note the sale of an example, from a noticeably later due state with a touch of striking incompleteness at the N in NOS on the obverse legend, bringing 4,400 CHF is a 5/2016 Hess-Divo auction. This example, more evenly struck, albeit slightly more off-center on the obverse, appears otherwise entirely comparable. From the Redwood Collection of Swiss Coins
