Basel. City gold 2 Goldgulden ND (c. 1790) MS63 NGC, KM183, Fr-28a, HMZ-293b. An outstanding rarity in multiple form, with single guldens in gold appearing from time to time, but examples in double gulden weight appearing far less frequently. While a search of archived auctions reveals only few sales over the past fifteen years, it becomes quickly apparent that most show major production deficiencies, either the result of significant planchet striations that remain in the flan or an uneven strike. The present example, with its impressive undiminished luster, is all but void of those issues however, and as such, must instantly be considered a top survivor. Few marks further confirm how superb this coin really is. While no examples have sold recently at auction, we note the last sale traced to a 6/2011 Sincona auction. That example, far inferior to the present, with major strike deficiencies, as well as visible laminations near the liberty cap, realized an impressive 7,500 CHF hammer versus a 6,000 CHF estimate. Considering this coin's obvious superiority, and its finest-graded status, we expect that our estimate may prove rather conservative.Ex.
