Basel. City gold Medallic 3 Ducats MDCCLXIX (1769) MS62 NGC, KM-Unl., Fr-87c, HMZ-Unl. By Johann Jakob Handmann. An exceptionally produced medallic multiple ducat, immensely collectible due to its clear tie to Basel. On the obverse, BASILIA is sprawled at the top with a goddess securing the iconic shield of Basel; a cornucopia and the engraver's signature sit at the base with the Roman numeral date is exergue. On the reverse, God's radiant, all-seeing eye watches over a cubic alter with palm branch and laurel atop; A DEO PAX surrounds. On both sides, alluring orange-gold tone enlivens the surfaces, with reflective gleam admirably enhancing the raised surfaces. Light handling is evident, but no single instance is individually worthy of mention. An excellent choice for the expert collector of Basel or world gold collector that seeks larger gold issues and sure to be highly prized in whatever cabinet it lands. From the Redwood Collection of Swiss Coins
